Cody, Wyoming

west_yellowstone-cody.jpgCody, Wyoming / Aug 12, 2009 -- One hundred miles and a world away from Yellowstone, Cody is our home for the next two days. The trip here was beautiful, with the majority of the route through Yellowstone National Park, but it was a bit stressful in places with high mountain passes over the continental divide two times, at around 8,500 feet each (fine in a car, not so fine in the motorhome while towing the Jeep), and then a very long downhill grade out of the park towards the East Entrance.

Brake Problems

Although I have learned how to manage braking on the motorhome, the extensively long downhill resulted in overheating the brakes on the motorhome to where they were almost gone. The brake pedal just sunk to the floor. A little pumping was enough to get us stopped at a store/gas station at the base of the grade. We waited for close to an hour for the fluid to cool, but even then the brakes were mushy. After a long search for the brake master cylinder, I finally found it tucked away with access to it by reaching over the front wheel. I discovered that the fluid was very low. Not good. I had a bottle of brake fluid and filled up the reservoir. It was too late by this time however, because air had entered the lines and now the brakes remain mushy.

We decided to press onward. The rest of the trip to Cody, about 44 miles, was on good roads with a 50 MPH speed limit and wide turns that required no braking. Even after this distance the brakes had not recovered. So when we got to our RV park, more or the park later, we called around, found a shop and made an appointment for Saturday morning to bleed the brake lines. The guy I spoke with said that based on what happened, there could be "more damage" than bleeding would fix. I'm not sure what that could be at this point.

The RV Park

Our RV park in Cody is another one of "those" parks. The price is only $20 per night which is great, but you get what you pay for. There  are a lot of permanents here (people who live in the park full-time) and there are piles of junk here and there that make it seem even worse. Can we say "Trailer Trash"? This is the second one so far on this trip. The first one was in Nampa, Idaho. All things considered, we will stick with it. It's only three nights.

Cody

Because we just arrived, we have not explored the town of Cody yet other than going to the Walmart Supercenter just up the street and then checking out the RV park I THOUGHT we were going to. It is very nice, but probably much higher cost than this one. So more on Cody later...
