Braithwaite, Louisiana

(New Orleans)

We're spending a week in Braithwaite, just 20 minutes from New Orleans.

April 11, 2010 -- Braithwaite, Louisiana -- We drove the 200 miles from Pensacola to Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, our intended destination on Saturday, April 10th only to find out that the reservation was for Sunday the 11th not Saturday the 10th. There were no sites available for us that night. So by a stroke of luck, they called another state park in the area and found out there were 3 sites available. We drove the 18 miles from Westwego to Braithwaite which included a ferry over the Mississippi (fun!) and arrived around 8PM.

Our drive included a stop in Mobile, AL to see the gravesite of Joe's dad. We found out that there are two Pine Crest cemeteries and he was located in Pine Crest West. So we drove there. After a bit of trouble, the man in the office, a maintenance worker, found the site. We were taken aback by the condition of the grave. There was no headstone and weeds growing on top. Quite disturbing.

After some calls, Joe found out that the headstone had been ordered but there had been no follow-up with design, so was unfinished after seven months since the burial. Action is being taken and there will be a headstone soon.

We're at Saint Bernard State Park, a really nice place located on the east bank of the Mississippi, downriver from New Orleans and only a 20 minute drive from the city. The park is peaceful, very green with lots of trees and huge gaps between the spaces. So far based on this one and Bayou Segnette, the other state park we have stayed at, we are very impressed with the Louisiana state park system.

Today, Sunday, we are planning to take the 20 minute drive into the city and enjoy some good food take photos and do a meeting. Then the work week begins.
