A Day in New Orleans

Photo Gallery

New Orleans, LA -- April 11, 2010 -- Only a 20 minute drive from our campground in St. Bernard Parish, we arrived and finally found a parking place about 1:30 on Sunday afternoon. The weather was beautiful and we set off on a walking tour with the plan of getting a good lunch, a meeting and a desert of Beignets. Two out of the three goals were met.

The first goal was to get to an AA meeting because it had been way (way way) too long since we had been to one. The last time we were here was January 2008 at which time we went to two meetings at the Lambda club, so we chose to park the Jeep nearby and stopped by to check the schedule before we started our trek into the French Quarter. There was a mens' meeting at 5pm and an open meeting at 7PM.

Our next door neighbors recommended Port of Call, a hamburger and steak restaurant. This is not typical New Orleans cuisine, but it is what Joe and I like, so we decided to look it up and that's where we had lunch. It was great and well worth the price and walk to get there.

After lunch we walked back to the Lambda club and attended the 5pm meeting. It was well attended and a good meeting. It was a relief to be there.

FInally, we headed out into the French Quarter again towards Cafe Beignet to get our beignet desert. It was a long walk, about a mile. We found the location with the help of Google Maps on the Blackberry. But when we got there, it was closed! Such a bummer. What we didn't know at the time is that there are two locations, about a block apart. Oh well, better luck next time.

Then after a failed hunt for a Starbucks, we started the long walk back to the Jeep. Despite the long walks and failed hunts, we actually had a great day.

Total miles walked: Approximately 5.3 miles. Ugh.
