March 19, 2011 - Winter Park, FL -- Mawley Brown breathed his last breath today. I woke up after sleeping in and found him lying listlessly in one position, unable to move. He was alive, but obviously not doing well at all. During the previous couple weeks, he had been getting progressively despondent and losing tufts of fur.
So on this day, it was clear to Joe and me that it was likely his last. Being Saturday afternoon, we searched for a vet who had after hours emergency service and took him to to Veterinary Healthcare Associates in Winter Park, Florida. After doing a blood test (which came back normal), we were told that he had serious issues that needed to be treated but further testing would be necessary.
Joe and I met outside to discuss the situation and ultimately decided that due to our home conditions of living in a motorhome and unfortunately, money, that we couldn't see being able to deal with him coming back home. He was 12 years old and the chances of returning to a good quality of life was low. We had to focus on what was best for Mawley, not us. So we made the difficult decision to have the doctor perform euthanasia.
I stayed in the room holding Mawley as the doctor administered the overdose of medication and witnessed Mawley take his last breath of life. It was a heartwrenching moment.
