9/11 Memorial, World Trade Center, New York, NY |
September 17, 2011 / New York -- In Lower Manhattan at the footprints of the original Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, is the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. It opened a week ago, on September 11, 2011 to the family members of the victims of the attack of September 11, 2001, exactly 10 years after the event. The memorial was built as two square holes in the ground exactly where the former buildings stood. The holes are 30 feet deep and waterfalls have been created on the 4 walls of each pit. In the center of the pits are smaller square pits where the water continues to fall giving the perception that it is falling into infinity.
Entrance to the memorial is free, but during the first several months there is a controlled access system to control crowds due to the fact that there is only one entrance during construction in the area. We were fortunate to get our passes to enter one week after the initial opening, on the 17th. The backlog is now through November.
Immediately upon entering the facility you pass from construction chaos to organized structure. The park is very well designed and although new, looks established already as if it has been there for awhile.
