Kankakee, IL / Sunday, Aug 30, 2009 -- We made it to Kankakee around 3:30 PM today after a 6 hour drive from Iowa City, IA where we spent the night at the Walmart Supercenter there. It was also the second of two 250 mile drives in two days. Yesterdays' drive from Council Bluffs, Iowa (on the opposite side of the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska) was highlighted by the front tire blowout in Des Moines, IA. So needless to say, we were happy to finally arrive at our destination.

Kankakee is 66 miles south of downtown Chicago, about an hour and half "on a good day" we were told. We will stay here through Thursday night, pulling out on Friday due to the Labor Day weekend. Despite the distance into Chicago, Joe and I are going to try to get there one afternoon this week. He's never been and it's been a few years since I've been there.

I'm taking Friday before Labor Day an Tuesday after off to get a total of five off days in a row. So we're planning on driving east over the those days to make some good headway on our northeast destination of New England. We should be in Burlington Vermont by Tuesday afternoon.
