November 20, 2012 - New York, NY -- I drove a ZipCar van to Somerset, NJ for the final time to pick up our equipment and deliver it to the new location in New York. There was a horrendous traffic jam on the approach to the Newark Bay Bridge into Bayonne, NJ due to construction which caused an hour and a half delay.
I already had plans to stop at ShopRite in Jersey City to get some supplies for Thanksgiving dinner to save costs over shopping in Manhattan. Being so late due to the traffic jam added a lot of stress to this decision, but I knew I'd regret it if I didnt take the few minutes to make the stop. What's another 20 minutes when I'm already 2 hours late?
It was smooth sailing from there, under the Hudson river via the the Holland Tunnel and into Lower Manhattan. Then it was a bit of a challenge finding the location and dealing with more traffic congestion. But I finally found the building and got unloaded.
The final challenge was to find a parking place for the van. After failing due to one full garage and a price gouging garage, I settled for the Pier 40 garage who was charging a flat $35 fee due to electrical damage from Hurricane Sandy.
It was nearly 4pm by the time I got to the data center. After installing the servers, I finally got home at 9PM, unloaded spare parts and then drove to drop off the van and then to Steak N Shake for dinner.
Whew, what a day.
